Artist Statement

My most recent work involves large-scale mixed media. I begin painting with acrylic on paper, then layer drawings in graphite, charcoal or ink .

My approach is open ended and intuitive.

The Chrysalides Series chronicles my fascination with the miraculous intricacy of these tiny vessels housing developing creatures. This strong curiosity triggered an urge to draw and paint these miniature dwellings. As I created these images, they emerged layered with personal meaning for me. The fragile forming of the chrysalis marks the beginning of a process of profound transformation. As in my personal growth as an artist, the magic of the process occurs in secret, within the primordial soup of rearrangement and dissolution.  One creature enters and another emerges. The emerging creature is so greatly changed that its identity is gone.

I began drawing the outer vessel and then was intrigued by the unknown forces within. At present I am painting and drawing my concept of the chemical process within the quiet transition followed by explosive phenomena.

As I search for that emerging magic, my art becomes increasingly more abstract. I am so grateful and eager to be creating art as my second career.

Mary Oliver asks “... what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

I respond that I will surround myself with art, seek creative inspiration, continuously learn from others and pick up my brush and begin yet again.
